More investment losses may be added to the taxpayers’ tab
The City of Vallejo filed for bankruptcy last year. Is your city next?
Many cities have overextended themselves
with frivolous spending, growing bureaucracy and overly generous
government union contracts. And the taxpayer is left holding the bag.
Now, under the radar, another city crisis is brewing!
California Public Employees’ Retirement System
(CalPERS) is now letting cities in California know that their
investment fund for 1.6 million workers lost about 25% (close to $300
billion) due to stock losses and highly leveraged and irresponsible
real estate speculation.
Taxpayers may have to cover these losses for city employees’ guaranteed government benefits.
If your city is in trouble, email me at

Government prohibits religious practice
Burma, a repressive Buddhist state, has ordered a stop to
all Christian services held in residential homes.
The use of religious home studies has grown since Burma
stopped issuing building permits for churches in the 1990s.
Pray for our Burmese brothers and sisters in Christ. |

Brutal killings continue
Christians in Mosul are still being targeted for death.
They need your prayers.
Although it is difficult to state how many Iraqi Christians
are in the country, the number, prior to the fall of Saddam
Hussein, was around 550,000.
Violence targeting Christians has caused many to leave the
country. Church leaders in Iraq conservatively estimate that
almost 75,000 Christians live outside Iraq in Syria, Jordan or
in the West and that another 75,000 Christians live outside
northern Iraq.
That means less than 400,000 Christians remain in Iraq.
Recently, almost 500 Iraqi Christians, including pastors
and priests, have been murdered because of their faith. Even
more Christians have been kidnapped for money or forced to
denounce Christ.

Government prohibits missionary work
Christians in Buddhist-dominated Cambodia were officially
banned from evangelizing because they “disrupt society.”
Cambodia’s Ministry of Cults and Religions ordered that
“Christians are prohibited from visiting people’s houses by
knocking on the door and waiting to say ‘the Lord has
arrived.’”
Local media reported that Christian missionaries are
accused of offering cakes and other sweets to children in
exchange for their conversion to Christianity.
Church groups also offer food, clothing and free English
lessons as a means to introduce people to Christianity.
And the directive directly bans using money or other means
to persuade people to convert.
There are less than 70,000 Christians, mostly Catholics,
and only about 170 churches in the Southeast Asian country in
2006. A full 95% of Cambodia’s 14 million citizens are
Buddhist.
Please pray for Cambodian Christians, a change in policy
and a revival. |

How you can help
The number of Christians forced out of Mosel because of targeted attacks is nearing 15,000 people from about 2,500 families. Most are now trying to return.
These are Assyrian Christians, the indigenous people of Iraq.
You can help these persecuted Christians by praying for them and contributing financially to a group that is working with the Iraqi government to protect them.
This group badly needs financial support to help identify and protect the Christian population.
You can learn more and contribute at www.AssyrianChristians.com. |
