For over 20 years, Barack Obama sat without protest under the teaching of his spiritual mentor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright.

Dr. Wright and his church, Trinity United Church of Christ, are advocates of Black Liberation Theology.

This is important, because in understanding this ideology, you can understand the vitriolic preaching, the anti-Semitism, the racism, the anti-Americanism, the odd beliefs such as blaming the U.S. for 9/11 and the propagation of the HIV virus.

Much of it mirrors Marxist doctrines of class struggle and economic determinism.

Black Liberation Theology was defined in 1969 by the National Committee of Black Church Men.

Basically:

  • It’s a theology of “blackness.” It affirms being black, freeing black people from white racism. The result would be freedom for both white and black people.
  • Blackness is not just about skin color, but a symbol of oppression that can be applied to all persons of color. Liberation is needed by all oppressed by white society.
  • Christian theology is a theology of liberation from being victimized by white oppression. Jesus’ work was that of liberation. The pain of Jesus is that of blacks.
  • White Americas don’t have the ability to recognize the humanity of people of color, so a separate black theology is needed.
  • God is the liberator of those who labor under the oppression of ruling classes, especially in their economic pursuant.
  • The Gospel was given to provide a means of freedom from the oppressor.

Bottom line: Black Liberation Theology distorts the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Word says:

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”—Galatians 3:28

Black Liberation Theology salvation is less about Christ in you and more about a political Christ with a liberal political agenda.

And the political agenda is based on a lie: That life for blacks in America is one of oppression. It’s all about being victimized.

Rev. Wright's replacement, Rev. Otis Moss, is interesting, but theologically unsound. On Easter Sunday he used John 20:16 in an out-of-context way to talk about Wright and Black Liberation Theology. To see what he said, click the Play button below to watch the video.

Reflection

"It costs God nothing, so far as we know, to create nice things: but to convert rebellious wills costs him crucifixion...You must make your choice.

"Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman and something worse...

"You can shut him up for fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God."

—C. S. Lewis
